Below are the land grants issued on Skeggs (or Skaggs) Creek. These listings
were taken from Jillson's two-volume collection "The Kentucky Land
Grants" and from county grant records on file in the Kentucky Secretary of
State's office in Frankfort.
A few explanations are in order:
First, some of these grants, especially some of the pre-1800 ones, may not be
on Skeggs Creek in Rockcastle County. There were also Skeggs Creeks in Barren,
Cumberland, and Monroe Counties. In some instances the county was not given. I
have eliminated the ones I could positively place in those counties, but a few
may yet survive on this list; I'm especially suspicious of the ones on the
South Fork. Other grants, like the
Buckner grant, were
entered as being on "the waters of the Rockcastle River" and are not
included here.
Second, I have listed no watercourse if the grant was on simply "Skeggs
Creek."
Third, the date generally reflects the date of the survey.
Fourth, the names are generally in the name of the person who actually took
possession of the grant, not necessarily who originally applied for the grant.
For example, Jacob Renner Jr obtained a 100-acre grant on 30 Mar 1847, but
immediately assigned it to Vincent Renner; below, that grant is listed as
Vincent's.
Fifth, some watercourse designations are not called the same today as they were
then, i.e., Long Branch is Sinking Branch on maps today. Other designations are
misleading, i.e., John Renner's 1835 grant places it on the East Fork, but it
was actually on Long Branch; Solomon Rowe's 1866 grant is listed as being on
the East Branch of West Fork, but it, too, was on Long Branch.
Sixth, I have corrected some obvious spelling mistakes, i.e., Nicholas Minks's
name was spelled "Mincks," the "e" was always absent in
"Rowe."
