The hand-inscribed stone reads: "REBCA SOUTRD WAS B NO THE 24 95 DO OCT
THE 19 71." My translation: "Rebecca Southard was born November the
24th, 1795 and died on October the 19th, 1871." Rebecca's census birthdate
is about 1795 and she last appeared in the census in 1870. So those dates fit
well.
Rebecca was the wife of John Southard, who presumably died between 1860 and
1870. I believe Rebecca's surname was McClure and that she was the daughter of
Holbert McClure I and Phoebe Habiatt. There is no direct evidence for this that
I know of (I could be wrong, please correct me), but the circumstantial
evidence (including names of children and the relationships between the
Southard and McClure families at the time) is strong.
John and Rebecca, and some of their children and grandchildren, were members of
the
Hopewell (Wellhope)
Baptist Church, located about two miles up the East Fork. |

This is the stone of John J. Sowder, son of Hackley Sowder and Esther
Vanderpool. He was born about 1848 and died in October of 1872 (although it's
hard to tell from the photo, the number is a "7" not a
"9"). He married Emaline Southard, daughter of Micajah Southard and
Rebecca Bustle. |

"Johney Andrew Pruett" was born 15 Nov 1882 and died 27 Mar 1886,
according to his stone. He was the son of
Andrew Prewitt and
Temperance Chaney. Andrew's parents were Joseph Prewitt and his wife,
Elizabeth Southard, daughter of John and Rebecca. (Rebecca was in Andrew's 1870
census household.) |

John W. Warren was the son of Milton Green Warren and Rebecca Stokes. |
