The will of Jarvis Jackson Cromer

Jarvis Jackson Cromer was born in Rockcastle County in 1836 to Joseph Cromer and Mary Linville. He married Samantha Renner, daughter of Vincent Renner and Charity Storm, about 1864.

J.J. and Samantha are one of the best embodiments of the intertwined lives of the Cromers, Linvilles, and Renners on Skeggs Creek in the early and mid-1800s.

From all available records, J.J. and Samantha were born and lived their entire lives with a couple of miles of the Walnut Grove Cemetery. Their home for many years was just up Long Branch north of the cemetery; both are interred in the cemetery, as are many, many of their ancestors, siblings, cousins, etc.

They were second cousins (J.J.'s grandmother was Louisa Renner, Samantha's grandfather was Jacob Renner Jr, Louisa and Jacob were siblings); they lived within shouting distance of not only each of their parents (Joseph and Mary's land was a few hundred yards from the cemetery, Vincent and Charity's was less than a mile up Long Branch), but of her grandparents (Jacob and Abigail owned land that bordered both Joseph Cromer and Vincent Renner); numerous other cousins, aunts, uncles, and siblings lived on adjacent property; most of their children married into established area families (Doan, French, McClure, Pitman).
